RESEARCH, SCHOLARSHIP AND OTHER CREATIVE WORK
My research has been marked by a cross disciplinary approach, linked to a broad, rather than specialised knowledge, of cutting edge technology in both the biosciences and information technology. Since my appointment six years ago I have founded four laboratories, each distinct, but with overlapping areas of research support, recognized internationally. Over the last six years I have raised, with others, a total of $3,977,025 for research in UWA. When prorated per PI I have personally been responsible for raising $2,201,039 this includes more than $1.2m in commercial funding. I have also been active in scholarly research into teaching methods, obtaining numerous grants and publishing regularly on the use of new media and new methods in education. I have successfully supervised 23 research students. I have published 44 refereed papers.

I am a founder and co-director of SymbioticA (with Professor Miranda Grounds).

This unique research laboratory/studio, for artists to come and interact with biologists and use the new IT and bioengineering techniques in their work, managed by Oron Catts is rapidly developing an international reputation. Both Oron and I have been invited to collaborate, consult and talk about our experiences to a number of institutions in Europe, Asia and the U.S.A. who are attempting to follow our lead. We were recently invited to form one of the key exhibits at the leading art and science exhibition in Europe, Ars Electronica. Our exhibit, a “creative” biorobot, was reported on television programs across Europe as well as in numerous print and radio reports.
